Award Citation:

Dr Dharmalingam was the first to discover the induction of mutagenic DNA repair during restriction of nonglucosylated T4 DNA in Escherichia coli. He also discovered in this system the alleviation of restriction by SOS functions. He has characterized the rglA (mcrA) and rglB (mcrB) components of the rgl (mcr) restriction system.
