Dr Chatterji has studied the mechanism by which RNA polymerase of Escherichia coli gets switched from the initiation to elongation mode and also mapped the active site geometry of the enzyme. He has shown that the sigma subunit is released from RNA polymerase after it has transcribed a short transcript of 3-7 nucleotides.
